Higher risks of weight gain

Sleep only turns out to be healthy if you are sleeping within the recommended hours for your age. Sleeping for more or fewer hours means an increased risk of added weight gain on your health. Six-year Canadian research backs up these facts.

For the six-year period, the research was conducted, sleepers who slept for shorter or longer hours than the recommended sleep hours for their age added more weight. Longer sleepers gained an added weight of 1.98 kg compared to 1.58 kg for short-hour sleepers. Participants who slept for more than 9 hours stood at a 21% risk of falling obese.

Increased risks of heart disease

Coronary artery disease has been linked to both shorter and longer hours of sleep. A study conducted by National Health and Nutrition experts found out that people who slept for more than 8 hours in a day had a double chance of falling victim to angina disease and a 10% chance of getting coronary artery disease.
An analysis conducted by the Nurses’ health study on the health effects of sleep duration in women also gave similar findings. Women who slept for up to 11 hours had a 38% chance of contracting Coronary artery disease as compared to 8-hour sleepers.
